Please Note

EFFECTIVE 4/1/2025 - NEAR remains completely full to beyond capacity. We are currently unable to accept any surrenders other than returns of birds we have previously adopted (as obligated by our Adoption Contract).

If you would still like to fill out the surrender request, we will do what we can to make recommendations for other rescues and/or sanctuaries which might be able to help, but you should understand that the parrot and exotic pet bird segment of the pet trade is currently in the midst of the greatest crisis in its history! As the Baby Boomers continue to age out, we find that most have made no pre-arrangements for the care of their birds once they are no longer able to do so themselves. Since the Baby Boomer generation owns the lion's share of all the pet birds in the US, rescues and sanctuaries are inundated with surrenders on a daily basis, leaving almost every reputable rescue and sanctuary in the country on the brink of financial and capacity failure.

NEAR is not immune to this crisis.

If there is anything we can do to assist, we will make every effort to help, but please understand from the start that there is a very real possibility there may be no simple solution to your surrender requirements at this time.

Veterinary Pre-Screening

PLEASE NOTE! For the safety of your bird and all the birds in the rescue, it is important for NEAR to do everything possible to ensure the health of birds entering our facility. We strive to maintain the highest possible health standards for all the birds in our flock.

If you have veterinary records for your bird, please provide them at the time of relinquishment. If you don't have a vet or can't get to one, we can obtain the screening services for $55.00.

We can always use donations and other financial assistance to provide health services for the birds in our care, however if you cannot afford to have your bird vetted, we will still approve the surrender.

NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE TURNED AWAY BASED ON ABILITY TO PAY FOR VETERINARY CARE!

Please consider providing a donation NEAR to help defray the cost of health screenings -- but understand that a donation IS NOT REQUIRED in order to complete the surrender.
